Exhibitions - 2009 - Stillness

November 6 - December 18, 2009

There exists no serious artistic achievement in which some measure of silence is not present, and due to this silence art is rooted in the past and goes far beyond the aesthetic exigencies of the present. The art in which silence has become the primary moving force reaches its goal by means of space and form alone. - Jan Krugier

This exhibition explores static and dynamic notions of stillness in twentieth century art. Understood as both tranquility and as a pause, or refrain, from action, stillness was a central theme and philosophical ideal which many artistic movements, including pittura metafisica and Surrealism embraced.
