Exhibitions - 2009 - Tension, Invention, Intoxication and Liberty: Victor Hugo to Martín RamÍrez
January 8 - February 6, 2009
Art speaks to us on a level that transcends words. In its most varied forms, art exposes truths that connect body and spirit, and reach beyond ephemeral moments. Art making has forever existed as an emotional and spiritual means of necessary expression, but while “accepted” art has been created over time, the depth of the human spirit that was once the heart of artistic production has been replaced by the commercial and fashionable.
Jean Dubuffet described art -- both “fine” and what we often mistakenly label “outsider” -- as “filled with tension, truly inventive, intoxicating for its viewer and created with complete liberty and freedom from limitations and expectations exerted by the cultural.” These qualities are at the heart of this exhibition.
